Hand hygiene, gloves and Ebola Virus Disease

18 December 2014

Hand Hygiene Australia (HHA) has provided a useful statement about Ebola Virus Disease and the use of alcohol based hand rub on gloved hands. HHNZ supports the recommendations provided by HHA. We also recommend that health professionals always seek specific advice from their DHB about the infection prevention and control procedures to follow in the event of a suspected or confirmed Ebola Virus Disease case. For the first time since the HHNZ Programme began, the national hand hygiene performance has reached 75%! This is a significant milestone for hospital hand hygiene performance in New Zealand and we congratulate all DHBs for their focus on driving improvement. WDHB takes home top hand hygiene award

Whanganui District Health Board (WDHB) has scooped the Hand Hygiene Quality Improvement Award 2014 for a DHB with fewer than 300 acute inpatient beds, or fewer than 1750 hand hygiene moments for national hand hygiene auditing. Read more here.
